Where I'm From

I am from abuse and dysfunction
Home to home
I am from beatings, rape, and demeaning words
That makes u feel so alone
I am from tears, fears, and screaming
All night long

I am from hospitals, padded rooms,
And drugs to make u calm
I am from medication, no escape
And pealed paint on the walls

I am from struggle, happiness,
Fear and strength
I am from hopeless thoughts
No way out, any escape

I am from many schools, teachers,
Friends and classmates
I am from four high schools
Where friends don’t last

I am from Grandmother and Granddad
Toasted Marshmallows, hot chocolate
And singing songs
I am from a fireplace with burning logs
Brought in from the cold winter nights

You could say I’m from the bad
But I will turn myself good
The past is gone
And my future is bright
